Medina’s Jim Foss rolled a 257 game in the four-bowler finals on Sunday afternoon to capture the 60-and-Over Tour presented by Batavia Downs Gaming tournament at Medina Lanes.
The 62-year-old hard-throwing right-hander had to wait to see if that score would be enough to claim the $535 top prize, however, as Rochester’s Don Perrault stepped on the approach for his 10th frame.
Needing three strikes to beat Foss by one pin, Perrault came through with the first two strikes. He then rolled the ball into the 1-3 pocket on his final delivery but the 5-7 split remained, giving Foss a 257-256 victory.
Perrault earned $415 for his runner-up finish.
Steve Nowicki of Rochester placed third, rolling a 223 game to win $325 while Cortland’s William Young finished fourth with a 215 game, good for $260.
A record 74 bowlers competed in the event, with 16 reaching the eliminator round and another eight bowlers cashing.
Foss, the bowling center’s proprietor, qualified in the fifth position with a 696 three-game series before advancing through three rounds of the eliminator finals.
The four bowlers eliminated in the semifinals each won $205. They were Pat Stefanik and Ron Ciminelli of Buffalo and Mike Feola and Pat Donaghue of Fairport.
Eight bowlers, including Scott Shields of Batavia, earned $130 each for making the cut. Shields rolled a 705 series to qualify for the eliminator finals.
Cashers ($70 each) included Troy Fanton of Kendall.
Leon Penazek of Rochester led the qualifying round with a 747 series, rolling a 298 third game (video above).
The next 60-and-Over Tour stop is set for March 9 at Brockport Bowl with competition getting underway at 11 a.m. The qualifying round will feature four games.
LEROYAN WINS ‘SUPER BOWL’ EVENT IN BATAVIA
Le Roy resident Samantha Hyde defeated Batavian Devon Leach to win the $500 top prize at the “Super Bowl” handicap tournament at Mancuso Bowling Center in Batavia on Feb. 9.
Hyde qualified for the eight-bowler bracket finals with a 930 score with handicap in the four-game qualifying round. She then defeated Batavian Jim Pursel and Rochester’s Steve Meyer to reach the title match.
Leach earned $300 for placing second.
Other qualifiers were Meyer and Chad Lillie ($180 each), and Kaelen Clouser, Selina McJury, Josh Elliott and Pursel ($120 apiece). DJ Andrzejewski and Austin Hawker also cashed for $80 each.
GENESEE REGION USBC RUNNING NO-TAP ON MARCH 8
Perry Bowling Center is the host of the 2nd annual Genesee Region USBC No-Tap Triples Tournament on March 8-9.
Squad times on Saturday are 1, 3:30 and 6 p.m. and squad times on Sunday are 11 a.m., 1:30 and 4 p.m.
First prize, based on 48 teams, is $900, with one in four teams cashing. Handicap is based on 90 percent of the difference in the team average and 630 — with the maximum team average set at 630, considering the bowler’s highest average form the past three seasons.
