Press release

Last fall, Purple Pony met with a local trainer from Batavia Downs who was looking for a new home for his retiring standardbred trotter aptly named ‘Time to Quit’.  After thoughtful discussion the Purple Pony Board graciously accepted the big boy and worked with him all winter long to help him learn a new career. He practiced learning skills to become a therapy horse, always demonstrating his calm demeanor and intelligence.

This spring, Bailey (his Purple Pony new name!) has shown what a 2nd career can be for a retired standardbred. He participated in lessons with Lynnette Short, PATH certified instructor as his trainer and Shelley Falitico as his leader during lessons.  He was paired with a young rider named Ana and the magic happened!

From the first lesson, the two were bonded. Ana gave her gentle command to ‘Walk On’ and Bailey complied in his large but gentle way. Ana loved everything about him, from his height, mane, big ears and even his tattoo on the side of his neck from his racing days. For nine weeks, the pair rode for 45 minutes a week through arena obstacle courses, trots and the sensory trail.

This story is a good story. A story of second chances, accomplishment and love. Thank you to our harness horse race family for your beautiful gift to us and thank you to Ana for letting us experience this life changing event with you.
