Press release
New York State is facing a stretch of extreme heat starting today, with high temperatures and humidity forecasted throughout the week. According to the National Weather Service, a heat index of 80 degrees or higher significantly increases the risk of heat-related illness and injuries on the job.
To help protect all workers, the New York State Department of Labor strongly urges employers to take the following precautions:
- Ensure workers take regular breaks in shaded areas.
- Provide at least 32 ounces of cool, potable water per hour for each outdoor worker.
- Set up shaded areas for rest and meals when the heat index reaches 80ºF.
- Implement regular rest breaks when the heat index hits 90ºF or above.
- Encourage workers to wear light clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunscreen.
It is also critical to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses. New and returning workers are especially vulnerable and should be gradually acclimated to working in hot conditions.
The NYSDOL has extreme weather resources — including extreme heat guidance — available on our Extreme Weather Guidance website.
