The City of Batavia Water Department would like to notify you in advance that the City Water Crew is planning to perform a necessary water shut-off on Bank Street on Wednesday, July 9th. This temporary shut-off is required as part of a larger project to install a future water service connection for the Office for the Aging.
Please be aware that in order to safely and effectively carry out this installation, it will be necessary to close the entirety of Bank Street for the duration of the primary work. The project will require us to excavate a substantial trench across Bank Street, located immediately to the north of the main entrance to the Office for the Aging building.
During the remainder of the construction period of Bank Street it would be advised to utilize Summit Street or Jefferson Ave as an alternative route from Main Street to Washington street along with the rear parking of the City Centre and the Alva Parking lot, allowing you to avoid the construction zone in its entirety until the project is completed.
We anticipate that the majority of this work — including the full water shut-off and trench excavation — will be completed on Wednesday, July 9th, with some preparatory activities, such as partial lane closures and temporary traffic restrictions, taking place on Tuesday, July 8th. We expect the complete road closure to be in effect for the day on Wednesday only, with limited, temporary lane closures on Tuesday to allow crews to prepare the site safely and efficiently. Bank Street construction will continue own for several more months.
We fully understand that this planned shut-off and street closure may cause inconvenience to local residents, businesses, and anyone traveling through the area. We sincerely apologize for any disruption this may cause to your daily routines and we assure you that our crews will make every effort to minimize these impacts and complete the necessary work as quickly and safely as possible.
In addition to the street closure, we would also like to inform all businesses, employees, and members of the public that the mid-block pedestrian crosswalk on Bank Street will be taken out of service for the duration of the project. Pedestrian crossing at this location will not be possible while construction activities are underway. Once Bank Street Streetscape construction is complete a new midblock crosswalk with be completed just north of the current crosswalk between the Office of the Aging and the Jerome Apartments Driveways.
As an alternative route, utilize the crosswalk located at the intersection of Bank Street and Main Street, which is situated at the south end of the block. Redirecting foot traffic to this intersection will help reduce congestion in the construction zone and will greatly decrease the potential for accidents or injuries involving both pedestrians and our work crews.

These improvements are part of our ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure, ensuring that Bank Street continues to serve as a safe and efficient passageway for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians alike.
