City of Batavia Police Back to School Safety Reminders

Press release

As our community’s children head back to school, the Batavia Police Department wants to remind everyone to prioritize safety above all else. Whether you’re a student, parent, or driver, we all play a crucial role in ensuring a safe and successful academic year.

For Students: Be aware of your surroundings, especially when walking or biking to school. Avoid distractions like using your phone while walking. Follow traffic rules, such as using crosswalks and obeying traffic signals. Stay with a buddy when walking to or from school, especially for younger students. Report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult, such as a teacher, school administrator, or police officer.

For Parents and Guardians: Review safety rules with your child, including stranger danger and what to do in case of an emergency. Establish a safe pick-up and drop-off routine, such as designating a meeting spot and ensuring your child knows how to contact you. Stay involved in your child’s school life, including attending parent-teacher conferences and staying informed about school safety initiatives.

For Drivers: Slow down and be cautious in school zones, especially during peak hours. Obey school zone speed limits and be prepared to stop for pedestrians and buses. Avoid distractions while driving, such as using your phone or eating while behind the wheel.

By working together, we can ensure a safe and successful school year for all. Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility! Stay safe, and let’s make this a great school year!
