Oakfield Fire Assistant Chief Chad Hilchey was released from Strong Hospital today, after being injured battling a 2nd alarm garage fire at 51 Farnsworth Avenue about 2:15 A.M. Wednesday morning.

Crews on scene reported there was a firefighter down as first responders worked to save the home of Joe Bradt, who is also a firefighter. Hilchey was transported to UMMC and then Strong Hospital. He was released this afternoon.

“Most of what they did was precautionary,” said Oakfield Fire Chief Sean Downing. “He had us all worried.”

Chief Downing thanked Mercy EMS, and all the firefighters from the City of Batavia who came to UMMC to offer their support.

“Of course we could not have done this without support from Alabama, Elba, Town of Batavia, Emergency Management Office, Sheriff’s Dispatchers and again, Mercy EMS and the City of Batavia Fire Department.

A benefit has been planned for both Hilchey and Bradt on October 5th at the Oakfield Fire Department.

Bradt is staying with his sister while he works to rebuild his home.
