Theme: “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”
Press release
The City of Batavia Fire Department is joining fire departments nationwide in recognizing Fire Prevention Week, October 5–11, 2025. This year’s campaign theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” focuses on reducing the growing fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in everyday devices such as cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, power tools, and other electronic devices.
“Lithium-ion batteries are safe when used properly, but misuse, damage, improper charging, or using counterfeit batteries can lead to dangerous fires,” said Joshua Graham, City of Batavia Fire Chief. “Our goal during Fire Prevention Week is to educate the community about safe charging and storage practices to prevent these types of fires in homes across Batavia.”
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 100 years, emphasizes that understanding the proper care of lithium-ion batteries can help prevent injuries and save lives.
The City of Batavia Fire Department encourages residents to follow these important tips:
– Always use the manufacturer’s cord and power adapter for charging.
– Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces – never on beds, sofas, or under pillows.
– Do not leave batteries charging unattended or overnight.
– Stop using batteries that show signs of swelling, overheating, or damage.
– Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash – recycle them at designated locations.
– Be aware that there are counterfeit, imitation, replica, and repurposed batteries sold, often much cheaper.
Throughout Fire Prevention Week, the City of Batavia Fire Department will host educational programs in local schools, visit community organizations, and share daily safety messages through social media. Residents are encouraged to participate, learn, and contribute to maintaining a safe Batavia.
“Fire safety starts at home, and we want our residents to be prepared, especially with the growing use of rechargeable devices,” said Chief Graham. “By taking simple steps, we can reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep our community safe.”
