ORLEANS COUNTY/Deputy takes down a male with a knife at Shelby residence where one person died, and another person was seriously injured

One person is dead and another is seriously injured after stabbings at 4643 S. Gravel Road in the Town of Shelby on Saturday afternoon.

The incident was initially called in to dispatchers just before noon as a disturbance. A second call received reported a knife was involved.

“Upon arrival, the deputy approached the house and was confronted by a male with a knife who came at the deputy, the deputy tased him, took him down, but he still wanted to continue to fight, and they ended up in a physical altercation where the deputy was able to take him into custody,” says Sheriff Christopher Bourke.

When other deputies arrived on scene, they found two victims with serious stab wounds and fire and EMS along with Medina Ambulance responded.

“They attempted to revive one person, but it was determined they were deceased. The second person was transported to the Medina Hospital with multiple stab wounds; they were then transferred to ECMC with serious wounds.”

The deceased is a 61-year-old male. The exact age of the second victim is unknown at this time.

The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the two stabbings and has recovered a knife on scene. One suspect is detained and is cooperating, Sheriff Bourke says.

The suspect in custody is known to police and has a criminal history along with some cases pending. Bourke says they believe the suspect and the two victims all stay at the residence together.

“Some sort of argument took place. We’re still working on the details of the circumstances that led up to this tragic incident.”

Bourke says with the weather conditions today, it takes a bit longer for deputies to respond as back up on calls.

“I’m very thankful that our deputy was able to take this individual into custody without being hurt, because we had an individual coming at him with a knife, we’re all thankful for that.”
