As City Historian, he will serve as the official steward of Batavia’s historical records, artifacts, and narrative. He will ensure that the people, places, and events that shaped our city are documented and shared for generations to come.
“As a lifelong Batavian, history enthusiast and history teacher ‘by trade,’ I look forward to this opportunity to serve our community in this role. I am grateful for the previous work by recent City Historians Larry Barnes and Ryan Duffy, and look forward to continuing with the tradition of excellence and professionalism they established. Finally, I appreciate the confidence of our City Manager and City Council and can’t wait to get started.”
The City Historian is a pastime nontraditional position for the City of Batavia, but plays an important role in maintaining archival materials, supporting research requests, collaborating with local organizations, and promoting public awareness of Batavia’s unique history.
From its early settlement and agricultural roots to Batavia’s role as a regional center for commerce and civic life, Batavia is a thriving City with rich history.
“I am confident that Jason will help continue that important work with integrity, enthusiasm, and professionalism to honor and celebrate Batavia’s rich history,” said Rachael J. Tabelski, City Manager.
In his new role, Jason will work closely with local partners, including the Genesee County History Department, community organizations, and residents to expand access to historical resources and support educational initiatives. He will also assist with commemorative events, historical designations, and special projects that highlight Batavia’s past while connecting it to our future.
The City encourages residents who have historical documents, photographs, or stories to share to connect with the City Historian’s office.
Please join us in welcoming Jason Smith as the new City of Batavia Historian.
