Monica Germonte inside her damaged home on Thursday morning. The one-story home on Dodgeson and Halstead Road was in the process of being remodeled after being struck by a vehicle last August. Germonte says after Tuesday’s evening’s accident, where an SUV crashed into her home almost in the same exact spot, she and her husband Michael and son Mark will not rebuild. The have lived there 37 years.

After Tuesday evening’s accident, Germonte’s home was moved off the foundation about a half a foot and has been deemed unsafe by code enforcement. A wood beam in the basement was struck in the front of the home and pushed through to the back of the home, bending joists and taking out new plumbing that had been recently installed. The Germontes are currently homeless and staying with their daughter in East Aurora with their dog. Their son Mark is a college student at UB and is staying in a hotel.
At the time of the accident, Mark had just finished studying at his desk under his front bedroom window and had just gone to bed when the SUV plowed into the bathroom next to his room.
“It sounded like a bomb went off,” says Monica Germonte.
“It’s only by the grace of God we’re alive.”
Monica says her and her husband’s bed was moved a foot away from the wall when the SUV struck the home. Their bedroom is located across from the bathroom.

Since the accident, the Germontes have had many helping hands from their church community help them salvage what is in their home.

“We have awesome people. Our church is wonderful. Anything we need, is we have to do is make a phone call and people are here.”
Monica says she can relate to feeling homeless.
Last March and May, she and her husband went two weeks at a time to assist families in Louisiana and Kentucky to do tornado relief to help those that have been devastated by natural disasters.
“Now were in a disaster of our own, you know those people, the tornado comes through and they have nothing left. Their home is gone, their homeless. So now we’re in the same boat being homeless.”

Home pushed off its foundation-March 26, 2026
Last month, Germonte attended a Town of Alexander Board meeting to let them know that the stop sign ahead sign placed by Genesee County after the August accident was not really being noticed and people were still going through the intersection. Germonte had requested rumble strips or speed bumps be installed on Halstead Road by the county as both accidents involved drowsy driving.

In mid-August of 2025, a pickup truck struck the residence on Dodgeson Road and destroyed the kitchen and bathroom. (provided photos) The Germontes have been working with their insurance and their contractor to create a new kitchen with the ceiling and floor already installed. Kitchen cabinets were ready for installation next, when the SUV struck the home on Tuesday evening.
