BATAVIA/YMCA Hosts Splash Week, providing free swim lessons to 150 community members

Press release

Batavia, NY — The YMCA is proud to announce the success of its annual Splash Week, a community-focused initiative providing free swim lessons to local families. This year, more than 150 community members have registered to participate, highlighting the growing need and strong community interest in water safety education.

Splash Week is made possible through the dedication of certified swim instructors who volunteer their time to teach essential water safety and swimming skills. The program is part of the YMCA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of age or ability, has access to lifesaving swim education.

In a featured video accompanying the event, Executive Director Josh Bender and Aquatics and Youth Sports Director Emily Hirsch emphasize the importance of these efforts. Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children under the age of 4, but research shows that formal swim instruction can significantly reduce the risk.

Through its Safety Around Water Program, the YMCA aims to empower children and families with the knowledge and confidence to stay safe in and around water.

“At the Y, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim,” said Bender.

The YMCA remains committed to expanding access to aquatics programming and continuing to serve as a resource for health, safety, and community connection.
