Information from a provided press release
On May 2, 2026, deputies from the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Garry Road in the Town of Eagle, for a report of a male subject, later identified as Matthew Craven, 38, of Eagle, entering a home while in possession of a handgun and had refused to leave.
Upon arrival, deputies located Craven across the street at another building and took him into
custody without incident.
Deputies recovered a loaded 9mm handgun from Craven’s person, alongside a large quantity of
methamphetamine. The handgun was determined to be a privately manufactured Polymer80 style
firearm that did not bear a serial number, commonly referred to as a “ghost gun” due to its
untraceable characteristics.
Craven was also found to be a convicted felon from previous arrest making him unable to
possess a firearm. The investigation revealed that Craven had entered the residence and refused to leave when directed to do so by the homeowner while possessing the handgun.
Craven was transported to the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:
Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree – Loaded Firearm (Class C Felony)
Criminal Trespass in the 1st Degree (Class D Felony)
Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th Degree – Intent to Sell (Class D
Felony)
Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree – Convicted Felon (Class A Misdemeanor)
Craven was later arraigned in the Town of Eagle Court and remanded to the Wyoming County
Jail on $50,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear in Town Court at a later date.
I wish someone would report the whole story on this! Matthew is my son, and back in mid February he had some kind of mental breakdown. I’m not sure if it was from taking drugs or just mental illness, but he completely lost all touch with reality and became extremely paranoid and delusional, believing that everyone including his own family was out to get him. His family who lives in Michigan, reported his mental condition to the crisis center in Buffalo multiple times, and even called the department of mental health in Warsaw when the crisis center failed to help! They did multiple welfare checks on him and were well aware that he was not in his right mind enough to keep his child, but refused to intervene on his behalf unless he gave them a “three step plan” to hurt himself or someone else! But in spite of his extreme paranoia and erratic behavior, he didn’t hurt or try to hurt anyone, and was only trying to defend himself and his delusions. I drove 6 hours to New York on March 13th intending to meet up with the crisis center for an intervention they suggested, but when I called to tell them I arrived, the said they changed their mind and if I had any issues to call the police! I even called the local hospital and asked if I could get him there, would they put him in the psych ward and was told no, that even though he was completely irrational, he would have to agree to being admitted! The police and cps in Warsaw were well aware of the situation as well but no one would help unless he committed a crime! He needed immediate psychiatric care, and instead of getting it, he was left to deteriorate further until he was arrested! Now he’s in jail and because he is still delusional, he is not able to adequately advocate for himself! This is not justice, it’s a broken system that is failing it’s people! If you can do anything to bring light to this situation or help him get the help he needs it would better serve your community than just reporting on charges that wouldn’t exist if someone, anyone, would have listened to the cries for help from Matthew’s family!
