Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C-Batavia) celebrated the governor signing his legislation, A.8340-C, dedicating the portion of State Route 19 located within the Town of LeRoy as the “Lt. Gary A. Scott Memorial Highway.”
Lt. Gary A. Scott was a Le Roy native who served as a second lieutenant with Company A, 1st Battalion, 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. On March 29, 1968, Lt. Scott was killed while attempting to save the life of a fellow soldier. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his bravery and sacrifice. With the governor’s signature, the New York State Department of Transportation will install and maintain signs recognizing the highway’s dedication to Lt. Scott.
“Lt. Gary Scott represented the very best of LeRoy and of our nation. He led with courage, placed the lives of his fellow soldiers before his own and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Dedicating this highway in his honor will ensure that his name, his heroism and his connection to the LeRoy community are remembered for generations to come. I am grateful to Senator Borrello, Lt. Scott’s family, members of the LeRoy community and everyone who remained committed to seeing this legislation through the process. This designation is a permanent and fitting tribute to a hometown hero whose legacy continues to inspire our community,” said Hawley.
