Press release/City Manager Rachael Tabelski
It is with a mix of sadness and pleasure that I am announcing the retirement of Shawn Heubusch as Assistant City Manager for the City of Batavia.
Shawn was appointed last August following an extensive search for candidates and active recruitment campaign. Chief Heubusch has served as the City of Batavia as Police Chief for 13 years and has been involved in municipal public safety for over 25 years of his career. During his time as Chief for Batavia, he has successfully led complex operations, managed multi-million-dollar budgets, overseen major capital improvement projects, and guided interdepartmental initiatives with success.
While Shawn Heubusch was Chief he lead the City of Batavia police operations through the COVID-19 Pandemic, Bail Reform, Discovery Law Changes and the Albany Police Reform Initiative. He was able to navigate and support our police officers during these major times of change as a professional and trusted administrator.
During his tenure he brought back the City’s bicycle patrol officers; established a Community Policing Committee within the Department, chaired the Batavia Police Community Night and Shop-with-a-Cop events. He is also responsible for establishing the Department’s mentor program for newly hired officer, the School Resource Officer Program, re-establishing a K-9 program, and growing the capabilities of the City’s Emergency Response Team (ERT).
As Assistant City Manager Shawn made improvements to the City’s risk management systems, IT operations and assisted with several capital projects. He will be leaving the City to take a new position with the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police (NYSACOP). The role includes overseeing the Association’s Traffic Safety Program state-wide.
Please join me in thanking Shawn for all of his hard work and dedication to the City of Batavia.
