Genesee County Spartans’ officials and players say they are determined to bounce back after a disappointing 2026 Northeastern Football Alliance season beset by personnel issues, leading to a 2-4-1 record.
Team owner Harry Rascoe announced this week that he will be returning as head coach, taking over from “Big Mike” Williams, who had stepped in after the early-season departure of Jermaine Henderson.
“We’re committed to returning to ‘The Spartan Way,’” said Rascoe, adding that indoor tryouts will get underway in December. “We’re recruiting for all positions in an attempt to right the ship.”
Rascoe named Dave Radley assistant coach and defensive coordinator and Nicholas Scott as offensive assistant. He said he is taking applications from others who are interesting in coaching the squad.

Five players who have been with the team since its return to action in 2023 have been named co-captains for the 2027 campaign. They are defensive back Tre Woods, running back Jzhon Henderson, linebacker Delonta Curry, defensive back Cody Wenner and offensive/defensive lineman Tim King.
Woods, who at 36 said next season will be his last, acknowledged that things went off the rails this past season.
“A lot of problems (occurred) and we had to roll with the punches,” he said. “But we’re very happy and thankful that Harry is coming back. Hopefully, he’ll be able to put the structure in place, and we can turn things around.”
Curry, 25, noted that the team is just two years removed from a 7-3 season.
“Personally, I feel like we can get the team back to what it was. The league has seen it; our year two (2024) we won seven games, and with the right people in place, we can do it again … maybe even win the league,” he said.
King, 36, emphasizing the need for a strong offensive line, said he has heard that some key linemen will be coming back to the team next season.
“Last year, it was giant mishmash of things going on; players and coaches coming and going but were moving forward with Harry, Dave and the rest of their staff,” he said.
Rascoe said he believes Corey Turpin and Aiden Pitts, two quarterbacks who have been successful in the league, will be back with the club.
In some positive news, seven Spartans competed in the NFA’s 28-8 victory over the Tripoint Football League in an all-star game in Virginia Beach, Va. Spartans who participated were King, Curry, Toast Malone, Ryley Elliott, Jalen White. James Brown and Logan Pike. Pike scored a touchdown in the game, Curry made 10 tackles and Brown returned a kickoff 86 yards.
Fundraising efforts will be starting with a “turkey bowl” raffle (with the drawing on Thanksgiving), Rascoe said. For more information, go to the Genesee County Spartans Facebook page.
