ORLEANS COUNTY/ Albion Correctional Facility begins Canine Training Program involving inmates

The Albion Correctional Facility held a ribbon cutting ceremony today to introduce a Canine Training Program at the state prison.

The Canine Training Program will provide inmates with jobs skills for an eventual re-entry into the community and the canines will receive care, socializing and training so they can be adopted into a permanent home.

The dogs are chosen by the Orleans County Animal Shelter and must be at least 6 months old and non aggressive.

The Canine Training Program is an 8-12 week program where 5 inmates and a trainer will meet with at least two dogs about twice a week to work on preparing the dog for adoption.

After the training, the dogs will be adopted out by the Animal Shelter.

The dogs will be housed in a dorm at the Albion Correctional Facility.

There were 35-40 inmates interested in the program, 5 were chosen.

The program is in collaboration with the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department/ Animal Shelter and Ebb Tide Kennels & Stables.
