GENESEE COUNTY/Person suffers burns in apartment fire in Alabama

Fire crews from Alabama were called to 2180 Judge road after fire broke out in a first floor apartment about 8:30a.m. Tuesday morning.

The fire went to a second alarm after reports of a person possibly trapped inside. After about 3-4 minutes, fire crews located the missing person, who was then loaded into the back of an ambulance to be checked out.

The female occupant of the first floor apartment suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was transported to ECMC by ambulance.

Alabama Fire Chief Gary Patnode says the quick response by fire crews and action by the occupant of the first floor apartment helped contain the fire damage to the first floor apartment. The occupant closed the apartment door when exiting which starved the fire of oxygen.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army were called to assist the occupants of the two apartments. The other two apartments in the building were not occupied.

According to Chief Patnode, a candle in the first floor apartment could be the cause of the fire.

There were several animals unaccounted for in the fire. One cat did get out, but fire crews were looking for a small dog and a cat.
