17 Fire Companies from Genesee, Orleans and Monroe Counties responded to a 2 alarm fire at 7735 Creamery road in Bergen about 8:00a.m. Monday morning.
The first call came in for smoke coming from a vent on the roof, a second call reported flames coming from a window in the south end of the structure, according to Bergen Fire Chief Garrett Dean.
Due to manpower issues at that time of day and humidity conditions, the response went immediately to a second alarm.
When crews arrived on scene they started an exterior attack to knock down the fire in the south end of the residence. An interior attack then followed with fire crew chasing the fire into the eves and the roof area which was a balloon construction which made finding the fire in the roof area more difficult according to Dean.
The staircase was also compromised and fire crews had to use ladders to get into the second story.
There was also a thicker layer of roofing to get through.
Damage was extensive to the the south end of the structure while the north end suffered heat and smoke damage.
County Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire which is believed to have started in the front section of the south end of the house.
According to the Sheriff’s Office there was a storm that moved through the area at the time and there was lighting.
Investigators will look into that as a possibility of a cause, but are unsure what the cause of the fire is at this time.
Emergency Enclosures responded to the scene to close up the structure.
No one was injured in the fire and no one was home at the time of the fire.
