GENESEE COUNTY/Labyrinth helps bring clarity in the Autumn Equinox

Today at 4:02 p.m. the Autumn Equinox arrived.

On the day of the equinox, a Latin term that means equality between day and night, the day and night are each 12 hours long.

Equinoxes occur when the earth is in alignment with the sun directly above the earth’s equator.

It is the moment of beginnings and endings which is represented in Sandra Swanson’s Labyrinth which she and her husband John constructed last year.

“I’ve always wanted a Labyrinth because I thought it might help me in doing my meditation work,” says Swanson.

Swanson used rocks from an abandoned stone wall left behind from an original farm on her property in the 50’s. With the help of a friend, the Swansons created their Labyrinth in about three weeks.

“I had an actual layout which we followed and we did the turns one by one and used double rocks at the turn to signify you are not going any further.”

Using a homemade protractor attached to a post in the center, the Swansons marked 3 feet all the way around nine times to make the concentric circles.

“You are supposed to remain silent and listen to yourself as you walk through the Labyrinth, and in the next day or so you will get some intuition about something you were thinking about.”

Sandra says it takes about 25 minutes to walk though the Labyrinth, to the center and back.

“Some people are happy they did it, some people have some tears and feel like they need a tissue and others are contemplative and happy to just be in nature and see what happens.”

This past Wednesday, about 30 people experienced the 25 minute walk with the help of Blue Pearl Yoga and instructor Marianne Skye.

The next event at the Labyrinth will take place during the Vernal Equinox on March 21st.
