GENESEE COUNTY/Sheriff’s Office warning public of medical information scam

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam involving personal medical information.

Perpetrators of the scam contact local residents by phone and attempt to elicit medical/history records. The information received is then used to fill out prescriptions which are sent to medical offices for refill.

Once signed, these prescriptions are being used to bill insurance companies.

The origins of this scam are unknown at this time, but it is under investigation and is most likely a multiple state crime.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind residents NOT to provide personal or medical information over the phone. Thieves can appear to be very knowledgeable and convincing in nature.

It is important to contact your local physician or pharmacy if you believe such information has been compromised.
