WYOMING COUNTY/Hazmat team called to shed fire in Pike

Wyoming County Hazmat crews responded to a shed fire at 28 Telegraph road on Tuesday afternoon.

Fire crews from Pike,Bliss and Gainesville were called to the property of Gerald and Lorena Thompson about 3:43p.m. after a passing motorist spotted the blaze and called 9-1-1.

The 40′ x 30′ structure was fully involved when fire crews arrived on scene. According to the Office of Emergency Management, many chemicals(type of chemicals not provided) were stored inside of and outside of the shed. Due to the fire, some of the containers were compromised and began leaking.

The County Hazmat team and firefighters deployed absorbent booms to collect and contain the chemicals that spilled.

The estimated loss is $75,000 and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire and hazmat crews were on scene about 5 hours and no one was injured.

Also assisting on scene, Wyoming County Emergency Services, the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department, the Wyoming County Health Department and NYS DEC.
