GENESEE COUNTY/Three vehicle accident sends four people to ECMC

Four people were sent to ECMC by ambulance after a three vehicle accident on Rt. 33, just west of Rt.77, in Corfu late Wednesday afternoon.

According to Undersheriff Greg Walker, a Hyundai Sonata was headed west on Rt. 33 traveling at high rate of speed when it rear ended a gray Honda Civic that was also headed westbound on Rt. 33.

The Hyundai Sonata then pushed the Honda Civic into a eastbound pick up truck. The driver of the gray Honda Civic, James M. Hoskins, of Corfu, suffered possible serious injuries and Crash Management was called to the scene to investigate the accident and the road was shut down for about 4 hours.

A driver and passenger in the pick up truck, Gerald D. Sanders and Lynn Sanders of Batavia, were transported to ECMC as a precaution. The male driver of the Hyundai Sonata, Jacob Szumigala, of Oakfield, who was in his mid 20’s, did not suffer any life threatening injuries.

Szumigala, was found to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs and was arrested for driving while intoxicated and transported to ECMC with minor injuries. Several charges are pending following the results of a toxicology report of Szumigala’s blood and a full investigation is completed.
