A garage at 6943 Knowlesville road went up in flames on Thursday morning and then spread to the exterior of the house nearby.
A second alarm was called in and fire crews from Oakfield, East Pembroke, Pembroke, Elba and the City of Batavia Fast Team responded along with one company from Orleans County
As the homeowner attempted to use a garden house to save his house, firefighters arrived on scene and hooked up to a working fire hydrant at the street to quickly stop the fire from spreading into the residence.
The hydrants were just turned on after public water was piped down the road last month. Many tankers in the second alarm response were not needed as firefighters made use of the readily available public water.
The garage was a total loss as were the contents, but the house, which caught fire on the outside, was saved.
There were several small propane tanks inside the garage that cause several small explosions.
The resident of the home was checked out by the ambulance crew on scene and appeared to be okay.
No one was injured in the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
