BATAVIA/Arrest made in Liberty street homicide

The Batavia Police Department today arrested Richard D. Hanes, 36, formerly of Thorpe Street, Batavia in connection with the Murder of Raymond Morgan, which occurred on 07/24/2018. Hanes was arraigned today in Genesee County Court before Judge Charles Zambito on a Grand Jury Indictment Warrant for Murder in the 2nd degree.

Hanes quickly became a person of interest in the homicide through a tip, and has been in custody on Parole violations since 07/26/2018, two days after the homicide. Hanes is scheduled to re-appear in Genesee County Court on 01/09/2019 at 1:30 PM. Hanes is still in the custody of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Additional arrests are not anticipated at this time but the investigation is still ongoing.

The Batavia Police Department would like to thank the Genesee County District Attorney’s Office, Genesee County Drug Task Force, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Parole, New York State Police Crime Lab and Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office for their assistance with the investigation.


According to DOCCS, Hanes was out on Parole after serving time in Attica after being convicted of burglary 3rd and robbery 2nd, class D felonies and grand larceny 4th/auto, a class E felony.
