LEROY/Scuffle with police leads to charges for two men of illegally parked vehicle

The LeRoy Police responded to a routine illegal parking situation at Top’s Supermarket at 128 West Main street in LeRoy about 1:30p.m. on Tuesday and a scuffle and foot chase ensued after the officer questioned a passenger in the pick up truck.

The pick up truck was located in the fire lane in front of the store and an officer approached the vehicle to ask why it was parked there.

According to Police Chief Chris Hayward, after speaking with the male passenger in the vehicle, the officer observed a weapon in plain view in the pick up truck. The incident escalated with the passenger getting into a scuffle with the police officer outside of the pick up truck. The officer then deployed his taser during the incident. The male passenger then took off and started to run away from the officer. A foot pursuit then ensued , the officer then deployed his taser a second time as the suspect was running behind Tops along the wood line. He was then taken into custody.

The male driver of the pick up truck was in the store at the time of the incident and is being cooperative with police. He was also taken into custody for the weapon in the vehicle. Hayward says the driver was in possession of a handgun in the store, but it was legally registered to him.

The passenger was treated at the scene by LeRoy ambulance and then taken into custody after the two taser deployments .

The officer did suffer a minor hand injury in the incident.

An ENCON K-9 also responded to the scene along with Sheriff’s Deputies and State Police. Hayward says there was a possibility other items/weapons that could be out in the wood line and a search of the area was conducted.

More information on the charges will be released as the investigation continues.
