Firefighters from Genesee, Orleans and Monroe counties battled a house fire at 6123 Cook road in Byron on Monday evening.
According to Fire Chief Robert Mruczek, the house was fully involved upon arrival, crews had difficulty in getting to the scene due to slick roads. Once on scene, crews were hampered by cold temperatures, wind and water supply issues.
Also an issue was the metal roof, which keeps everything in and is difficult to cut through to ventilate the structure.
Due to the cold weather, crews were rotated in and out of rehab which was set up in a school bus on site.
According to Genesee County Emergency Management, a mother and son live at the residence. The mother was not home at the time and the son was at home and was able to get out of the house. At the time of the fire the son was trying to thaw some pipes.
The home is a total loss and investigators are looking into the cause. The Red Cross was called in to assist the occupants.
