GCC’s 38th Annual Fashion Show, “Limitless” hits the stage on Saturday

Over 300 students and 60 businesses from the GLOW region, along with countless volunteers have been working on the production of the 38th Annual Fashion Show “Limitless” since January.

On Saturday the doors of Call Arena open at 6:00p.m. and the show begins at 7:00p.m.

If you don’t have a ticket, its not too late, they are $7.00 at the door. VIP tickets are sold out. Tickets are also available online.

Limitless” will take place in the 24,000 square foot indoor field house of the Richard C. Call Arena on the west side of the Batavia Campus. With plenty of space to accommodate 2,000 guests including ample parking, the students are planning one dynamic, fast-moving production, and a post-show party with entertainment and a vendor market. The event will run from 6-9:00p.m.

“This year the runways are shaped differently and we rearranged the flow of the space so its more enjoyable for attendees and we added more scenes,” says Laura Taylor, Instructor for the Fashion Business program.

Taylor says the international dimension is very strong in the show.

“We have students from all over the world and we have one of the most diverse programs on campus.”

Kento Takayama and Diamond Jones

Kento Takayama, a student designer from Japan says his inspiration for his design this year came from a museum visit in Washington, DC after viewing a painting of a Russian ballerina from an earlier era in time.

“I am bringing this era to a modern style, it shows simplicity at the same time intricate detail and sophistication.”

Diamond Jones is modeling Kento’s design for the first time. She also is assisting as an event planner.

“Kind of nervous, but excited,” Jones says.

“A lot of people have been telling me to get into modeling, so I thought I would try it.”

Charlotte Marcy, a French designer who moved to Rochester 20 years ago, became involved in the show last year helping students with their designs. This year she is presenting her own designs as a Community Designer.

“I teach at different universities and am a translator by trade, but here I am revisiting my fashion skills because it was actually my job before I moved from France to the United States.”

Marcy says she has been recycling clothes and fabrics that would otherwise go to the landfill.

“You have to come in with an open mind and open eye and let yourself be surprised by the creativity of the people who design and attend the show. Let yourself be surprised by what is coming by on stage.”

The vision and vibe of the show is brought together by the front of the house crew of event planners Jordan Brown, Sarah Westcott and Diamond Jones.

“Anything you see when you first walk in, entertainment, food, decorations, seating, tables and vendors, we make the show “Limitless”

“This is the student’s passion for fashion,” says Taylor.

“This is what its about. Its a form of communication, whether they go to a store and style the garments for their models or design their garments, its a way for them to be heard.”
