Two people were rescued from the Tonawanda Creek late Saturday afternoon after their canoe struck a log and flipped on its side, coming to rest between two logs.
The man and woman were able to secure themselves onto a log in the middle of the rapid flowing water.
With the recent rains, the creek water was high and flowing quickly in the area of 3507 S. Main street road and both subjects could not make it to shore.
The East Pembroke Fire Department along with the Town of Batavia Fire Department and Genesee County Emergency Management responded to assist in rescuing both subjects from the log in the rapids of the Tonawanda.
Genesee County Deputy Fire Coordinator Gary Patnode was able to assist with a rope rescue plan and swiftly remove the pair from the creek to safety.
“They were very calm, we had a bit of a barrier with the noise, the water was kind of loud out there because it is flowing fast,” says Don Newton, East Pembroke Fire Chief.
“All in all everything turned out very well, It was a good day for them and us.”
The couple appeared to be okay and were checked out by Mercy EMS.
