GENESEE COUNTY/Plane crashes after take off at LeRoy Airport

At about 3:05p.m., Dispatchers were notified of an airplane crash in the area of the LeRoy Airport. The LeRoy Fire Department and LeRoy Ambulance Service responded to the scene along with the NYS Police.

Upon arrival, a fixed wing single engine Beech, model A36, six passenger plane was observed at the west end of the LeRoy Airport runway. It was determined that the plane failed to take off and struck an earth embankment, coming to rest in an open grass area, remaining upright.

The plane sustained significant damage to the underbody and front engine compartment. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time and the incident is still under investigation.

There were four occupants in the plane. Pilot John Yates, 48, of Canandaigua, NY, his wife and two kids. All four were able to self extricate from the aircraft and were transported by ground ambulance to Strong Hospital for evaluation.

All injuries are believed to be minor at this time.

The family of four was flying back to Canandaigua at the time of the accident.

The Sheriff’s Office and the FAA are continuing to investigate the crash.

Also assisting on scene was Genesee County Emergency Management, LeRoy Police and CHS Mobile Integrated Healthcare Inc.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and the FAA are investigating the cause of a single engine airplane crash at the LeRoy Airport on East Main road on Sunday afternoon.

Dispatchers started receiving calls of a plane crash about 3:20p.m.

According to the Airport owner, Raymond Detor, there were four people on the single engine Beechcraft Bonanza. The plane had landed at the airport early on Sunday and was departing when it crashed just beyond the runway.

According to witness Rose Showler, the plane nose dived, almost like a kite. Showler called 911 as her husband ran to the airport fence to see of all the occupants were okay.

“One woman gave me the high five and said please call 911,”says Showler. She says she saw one other female and two males.

All four were transported to the hospital according to Detor.

The Sheriff’s Office will release information later in the form of a press release.
