BATAVIA/Standoff continues on Liberty street/Update from police

Law enforcement has been on location at 209 Liberty street since about 1:30p.m Monday with a male subject who refuses to come out of his second story apartment.

Police were called to the scene for a domestic incident where a sword was allegedly displayed.

When officers arrived on scene, the male subject allegedly shot a BB gun or pellet gun at police. A perimeter was then set up and the residents were told to shelter in place and Jackson School went into lockdown.

In the 4 p.m. hour, students were released on buses and escorted by police to their residence if they lived on Liberty street.

A warrant was obtained for the suspect’s arrest. He is currently charged with menacing according to Police Chief Shawn Heubusch.

Police then pepper gassed the second story to try and flush the suspect out.

The subject continued to go back and forth between windows looking to escape. At one point he was hanging out a window head first. He somehow was able to bring himself back inside.

Police then used bean bag rounds of pepper gas.

Then after 6:30p.m., the Orleans County Swat team arrived to assist and used CS gas rounds.

About 9:10p.m. police made contact with suspect again and are currently waiting him out.
