GENESEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORT/Two Rochester men run from police after not stopping for an enforcement detail

Two Rochester men are facing charges after they fled from a police enforcement detail that was being conducted in the area of Ellicott and Otis street in the City of Batavia on January 30, 2020.

At about 8:16p.m., Deputy Ryan DeLong and Investigator Pete Welker attempted to perform a traffic stop on a vehicle for an equipment violation and the vehicle failed to yield and fled the area traveling south on Otis street.

In an attempt to evade police, the vehicle drove through a yard in the area the backyard of 255 South Swan street, where the two occupants then fled the moving vehicle and led police on a foot pursuit.

The suspects separated during the foot pursuit, one ran across Jackson School property, both were eventually located and taken into custody.

The operator of the vehicle, Denzell A. Johnson, 27, of Orange St., Rochester, was arrested and allegedly found with a handgun and a quantity of controlled substances.

Johnson is charged with criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, a class E felony, criminal possession of a firearm, a class E felony, obstruction of governmental administration 2nd, unlawful fleeing an officer, criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th(2 counts),displaying a forged certificate of inspection, aggravated unlicensed operation 3rd, no/inadequate lights, unlicensed operation, driver’s view obstructed, failure to stop at a stop sign(2 counts) and insufficient turn signal.

The passenger in the vehicle, Shafatiah H. Miller, 26, of Lake Ave., Rochester, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance 3rd, a class B felony, promoting prison contraband 1st, a class D felony, promoting prison contraband 2nd and unlawful possession of marijuana.

In accordance with the current bail reform laws, both subjects were issued appearance tickets and will appear in City Court on February 18, 2020 at 1:00p.m..

The investigation is ongoing and more charges may be forthcoming.

The incident and the enforcement detail included members of the Genesee County Local Drug Task Force, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Batavia Police, Village of LeRoy Police, NYS Environmental Conservation Dept., NYS Probation and NYS Parole.
