In 2004 Georgeia Hurd thought she was going to lose her mother to cancer.

“She was severely sick, I was only in 3rd grade at the time and thought I was going to lose my mother that year. My mother’s goal was to be able to make it to see me graduate. After multiple extensive surgeries and many days in the hospital, it was a miracle, but she beat it. Sixteen years later she’s still fighting, but we’re going through this nightmare again,” says Georgeia, who is now 24.

On January 17, 2020, 57 year old Sharon Hurd, a lifelong Batavia resident, was diagnosed with colon cancer for a second time. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments at Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester. She has been out of work since being diagnosed.

Sharon had been working at the Batavia VA hospital for 18 years and previously worked at St. Jerome’s Hospital for 11 years before it closed.

“We have been wanting to set up some sort of fundraiser or auction for awhile now to try to raise money, but because of COVID we were unable to do so.”

“I have been worried about going to hospitals and different doctors. I have been worried about catching the virus. Not being able to have anyone at appointments with me. Having to rely on family doing the shopping for me and hoping they don’t bring the virus home, it’s scary having a low immune system in general on top of having cancer and just knowing this virus is out there,” says Sharon.

Sharon travels to Rochester for chemo and radiation everyday, Monday through Friday, and to other appointments about 2-3 times a week.

Georgeia has been helping her mom make it to appointments and taking care of her house.

“She lives in Attica, but comes here almost everyday to help me out. She takes me to all of my appointments, does my shopping, house work and yard work. Being at home I have been pretty fatigued from going through everything. I try to clean one room a day. I mostly relax at home and spend time with my kids Georgeia, Patricia, 37, and Leon, 39. ”

Sharon has just completed her first round of chemo and radiation and will be undergoing biopsy surgery on July 24th. Doctors will be deciding what the next move will be based on the surgery.

Georgeia created a GoFundMe page at the end of June to help her mother make ends meet during this time. The link is below.

Any donations are going to assist her mother with her mortgage, utilities, medical bills and living expenses.

So far they have raised a little over $1,200 of their $5,000 goal.
