“A Field of Thanks” opened today at St. James Episcopal Church on East Main street, thanking essential workers and the military who have served the community during the pandemic.

“I saw a beautiful display in Rochester and thought this is it,” says organizer Phyllis Draycott.

The display is a thanks to everyone worldwide that has served in their community. There are over 70 American flags and plaques with names of different organizations that have been on the front lines during the pandemic this past year. There are also names of military members and individuals that worked during the pandemic.

Students from the Mount Morris BOCES Criminal Justice Program were also on hand to explain the different flags throughout American history, up until the current American flag.

A flag was dedicated by Army Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Bill Joyce with members of the Genesee County Sheriffs Office raising the flag. Assemblyman Steve Hawley gave thanks to everyone in the pandemic that worked around the clock against a virus that was ever evolving.

“Knowing that in a time of need, you were able to provide for the well being of our broader communities,” Hawley told the crowd on hand.

The flags will be on display from 1:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. all week until the closing ceremony next Sunday June 13th at 5:00 p.m.
