WYOMING COUNTY/Cause of basement fire in Perry is accidental

Perry and Perry Center Fire along with Perry ambulance, responded to 14 Needham street in the Village of Perry on Monday night for a basement fire.

Crews arrived on scene about 8:10p.m. and assisted a tenant with putting out the fire which was caused by a trim nail punched into a 110 volt electric wire in the residence, the wire shorted out. The tenants were alerted by a basement smoke alarm going off and safely evacuated the building and called 9-1-1. An occupant applied water on the fire using a garden hose, which limited the damage to the home.

Residents stayed elsewhere overnight until the repair could be made.

The residence is owned by Jacob Bernard. It is a rental property with 6 occupants living there. Estimated loss is $2,500.

Also assisting on scene: Wyoming County Emergency Management Services, Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department and Perry Police.
