Some quick thinking by Village of Perry DPW workers along with the Perry Police and a Perry Center Firefighter, saved the life of a homeowner at 69 Lake street in the Village of Perry on Thursday morning.
Fire crews from Perry, Perry Center, Castile and Silver Springs were called to the residence of David and Maureen Orban about 7:26am for a reported house fire with a person trapped in the attic.
According to the Wyoming County Office of Emergency Services, David Orban was sleeping in a second floor bedroom and was awakened by the smell of smoke, and was unable to leave the bedroom to exit the house due to heavy black smoke.
Orban proceeded to the attic where he exited through a window to a lower roof. Orban was then rescued from the roof by Perry Village DPW workers Andy Lowery and Anthony Ricotta along with Perry Village Police Chief Grover,
Patrolwoman Croll and Perry Center firefighter Steve Mehlenbacher.
The rescuers used a ladder that was found on the property.
Orban was treated at the scene by Town of Perry Ambulance for minor injuries and was not transported to a hospital.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and the estimated loss from the fire is $100,000.
