GENESEE COUNTY/Sheriff’s Office investigating a homicide in Oakfield

On October 17, 2021 at about 10:57a.m., the Genesee County Emergency Communications Center received a phone call from a family member of Martin Maher, a 69 year year old resident of 32 Drake street in Oakfield. The family member had not been able to make contact with Maher and requested that a welfare check be made at his residence.

Sheriff Deputies responded to the residence and located Martin Maher deceased inside the home. It was determined that Maher was the victim of a homicide.

The ensuing investigation led to the identification of a suspect, Nicholas M. Maher, 37, who is Martin Maher’s son and resides at the same address at 32 Drake street in Oakfield. Nicholas was located in Erie County at about 3:35p.m. and was taken into custody without incident. He is charged with murder 2nd degree and was arraigned in the Town of Oakfield Court and committed to the Genesee County Jail without bail.

The Sheriff’s Office believes that this was an isolated incident and that there was no threat to public safety.

The investigation is being conducted by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office with assistance of the NYS Police, Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Genesee County Coroners’ Office and the Genesee County District Attorney’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing.
