GENESEE COUNTY/National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is April 24th-30th

Each year in April, the Office for Victims of Crime helps lead communities throughout the country in its annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW), which will be observed in 2022 on April 24-30.

This year’s theme is “Rights, Access, Equity for all victims”. This event is open to the public (advance registration required).

Speakers:
Brenda McQuillan, PhD, LCSW is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Roberts Wesleyan
College in Rochester, NY, where she serves as the Program Director for the MSW program and
Co-Chair for the Department of Social Work. She also works part time as a therapist for the
Justice for Children Advocacy Center in Batavia, where she provides mental health treatment for
children who have experienced significant trauma, most often-sexual abuse. She has over 20
years of experience as a social worker across multiple settings including a school district, foster
care agency, child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic, juvenile detention center, and
mental health clinic.

Sarah Palermo. Her daughter, Lindsay Kyle, was 26 years old when she was killed by a drunk
driver in 2003. She is a member of the Ontario Highway Traffic Safety Board. She has spoken
at Victim Impact Panels in eight counties as well as high schools in those counties. She has been
an activist and speaker for the last 17 years.

Carrie Swearingen is an Attica graduate, Registered Nurse and proud mom of two sons. She is
a survivor of domestic abuse by her (ex) husband who entered her place of employment in North
Carolina and shot her twice in the head. She credits God and her family and friends for getting
her through it all and allowing her to be here today to share her story and, hopefully, give someone
else strength to be saved from a bad relationship.
