GENESEE COUNTY/Sheriff’s Office warns of scam phone calls claiming you have a warrant and $ is required to resolve the warrant issue

Press release

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office has become aware of residents receiving phone calls from an
individual purporting to be a Sergeant with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office who then advises
them that they have an active warrant out for their arrest.

During the ensuing conversation, the purported Sergeant requests that a sum of money be sent in order to resolve the warrant.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THIS IS A SCAM

Although the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office may on occasion contact individuals to advise them
that they have a warrant, the Sheriff’s Office will never request that money be sent anywhere to
resolve the warrant.

Please be aware of this situation, and do not send money, gift cards, electronic
payments or render any type of payment as result of a phone call as described above.

If you receive a phone call from who you believe is the Sheriff’s Office advising that you have a
warrant and you do not believe a warrant exists, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at (585)343-5000
to verify.

If you have an active warrant, come to the Sheriff’s Office where we can assist you.
