Video of Gibson being taken into custody after standoff on Sunday evening

On July 30th, 2023, at about 3:31PM, the NY State Police attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations in the Byron area.
The operator of the vehicle was allegedly Akeem R. Gibson, 33, of Washburn St., Lockport. Gibson failed to stop for State Police which resulted in the vehicle pursuit.

At about 3:42PM, Gibson’s vehicle was spiked by City of Batavia Police Officer Freeman as Gibson entered the City on Bank Street. Gibson continued on into the apartment complex of Northside Meadows where the vehicle stopped, and Gibson ran on foot.

At first it was believed that Gibson ran into the woods that surround Northside Meadows, but police were
directed by witnesses to an apartment building where he ran into after exiting the vehicle.

Gibson could be heard barricading the apartment door and a stand-off ensued while negotiations began for a peaceful surrender, but Gibson was uncooperative. At about 5:48PM, officers forcibly breached the barricaded door and took Gibson into custody.

Batavia Police charged Gibson with criminal trespass 2nd degree, obstruction of governmental administration 2nd degree and resisting arrest in relation to the illegal entry into the apartment.

NYS Police cited Gibson with the related traffic violations, and he was held at the Genesee County Jail awaiting CAP court arraignment.
