BATAVIA/Comments and opinions will assist in the reconfiguration of Bank Street between Main and Washington Avenue

In a joint effort, the County and the City of Batavia teamed up and held a “Pop-Up Demonstration” on Bank Street Friday, that collected feedback from the public on improving walkability on Bank Street between Main Street and Washington Avenue.

Input was received in person and in the form of a survey link that was provided to those in the area on Friday. Information was received about landscape design, crosswalk placements, and overall mobility in the area which will undergo a redesign in the next year or so with the addition of the new Batavia Police Department at Alva Place and Bank Street.

“The whole purpose is to get people’s opinion on what they think and how they feel this space should be used better and what we can do to improve this area with the Batavia Police Department coming in, the new Healthy Living Campus and Office of the Aging, the Farmers Market. Its and area that gets a lot of walking traffic,” says Steven Falitico, Public Communications/Web Design Specialist for Genesee County.

The “Pop-Up Demonstration” shows what the proposed changes look like.

“So, we’re demonstrating what that actually looks like and then getting feedback from the community. The bump outs calm the traffic, and they make it narrow so people drive slower,” says Kaitlin Pettine., Director of Health Promotions for the Genesee/Orleans County Health Department.

“It also adds greenspace, lighting and adds colors with flowers and trees and it provides people with the opportunity to slow down and focus on the pedestrian.”

Diana Fox, Director of Office of the Aging, says volunteers received a lot of positive feedback on Friday. She says that with the narrowing of the streets, you can’t have a car go around a stopped car.

“Thats where people get hurt or injured or almost hurt, so I’m very excited about this project.”
