A firefighter suffered a knee injury and a family dog perished in a garage fire on Monday morning in East Pembroke.

Fire crews from East Pembroke, Town of Batavia, City of Batavia, Corfu and Darien responded to 9070 Wortendyke Road for the reported house fire, along with Genesee County Emergency Management and Mercy EMS.

Upon arrival at about 10:42a.m., crews were greeted with smoke coming from the attached garage area. Three people were home at the time of the fire and were able to evacuate the residence. According to Tim Yaeger, Genesee County Fire Coordinator, the family dog was inside the garage at the time of the fire and did not make it out. A firefighter suffered a knee injury while on scene and was transported to the hospital by private vehicle.

Yeager says the fire was contained to the garage and did not spread to the house. The house suffered smoke damage. A preliminary investigation shows the fire started in the garage area. Code enforcement responded to the scene to assist investigators in looking for the cause of the fire.
