According to Genesee County Fire Coordinator Tim Yaeger, due to the basement involvement, the fire was very difficult to extinguish. During scanner reports on Wednesday, fire crews from the Town of Batavia and Alexander along with the Town of Batavia Water Department were requested back to the scene several times. The second time they responded, crews used tankers and a hydrant at the road to extinguish the fire.

Yaeger says the preliminary cause and origin of the fire was a wood burning furnace located in the basement of the home.
