GENESEE COUNTY/2026 Local election petitioning starts Tuesday, February 24th

Participation and Choices for a Healthy Democracy

Press release

February 20, 2026 – Batavia, NY – Registered voters can expect a knock on their door very soon as one of the most fundamental acts of civic participation kicks off, petitioning. Volunteer members of the Genesee Democratic Committee will brave the cold to begin the annual petitioning effort on February 24th and continue collecting signatures through early March. This is the first step candidates must complete to earn a spot on the November ballot.

In New York State, candidates have to collect signatures from voters registered to their own political party in order to qualify for the primary ballot. Signing a petition is not an endorsement or a vote, it’s simply a way for people to say, “yes, voters should have a choice.” This civic gesture is simple but critical. One thing to note is that you can only sign one petition per office and this year we have multiple candidates running for Congress. If both candidates get their required signatures, then there will be a Democratic primary. Every signature is carefully reviewed by multiple people and committees to make sure it’s valid.

Participating in petitioning, whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, or independent is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy. When voters engage in this process, they help ensure that elections remain open, competitive, and representative. If you’re a registered Democrat in Genesee County and are willing to sign a petition, the Committee encourages that you reach out at: www.geneseenydemocrats.org/contact so we can find a time to meet up with you.

If you want to do more, we could use volunteers to help knock on doors and gather signatures. Even a few hours can make a real difference. This is the kind of hands‑on grassroots civic work that ensures the ballot reflects the voices and priorities of local residents. If you’re ready to help strengthen local democracy, we’d be thrilled to have you join the effort.

The Genesee County Democratic Committee is committed to working for democratic principles, values, and policies that affect the lives of every resident of Genesee County. For more information about the GCDC, visit our website at www.geneseenydemocrats.org and follow us on social media.
