Batavia, NY – A group of area citizens is forming the “Friends of the Ellicott Trail” to help maintain and expand the bike and pedestrian path that crosses the City of Batavia from Seven Springs Road on the east and running westward, terminating on Pearl Street on the west. The group currently has seven volunteers and is forming a new not-for-profit.
The Friends of the Ellicott Trail will kick off the initiative with a “Clean the Trail” day on May 9th and is looking for volunteers to join the cause. Organizers will meet at 9 a.m. on that day at the Batavia Ice Rink and begin picking up trash and litter from parts of the trail. The group will provide attendees with gloves and trash bags supplied by the City of Batavia.
“We are excited to form this group to help maintain and expand the trail. Ideally, we would be able expand the trail on the east, possibly making it as far as Le Roy”, said Tom Lichtenthal, who was instrumental in construction of the trail which was a joint effort between the City and the Town of Batavia. “It is really a great community asset and is well used by our residents”, he added.
The Ellicott Trail officially opened in July of 2020. It consists of a 10 ft wide crushed stone multi-use recreational trail that was created on old railroad beds, sidewalks, bike lanes, and includes a route that runs through DeWitt Park. Please visit EllicottTrail.com to learn more and to view or print the trail map. A free trail map brochure can be picked up at the Genesee County Visitor Center located at 8276 Park Road in Batavia.
Any interested volunteers are welcome to join the group the day of the event or email fetgenesee@gmail.com
