The Corfu Police Department officially opened to the public at their new location at 83 East Main Street at Homestead Park at the end of May. The Department, made up of nine part-time officers, is very happy to have more room. The old location just down the road at 116 East Main Street, was the size of a closet.

The Corfu Police Department will soon get a sign; board members are looking into where to place the sign.
“Matt Steinberg, one of our board members, he and I were just talking about it, getting a sign for up front, he’s going to come up with some different ideas so that we can, as a board, decide how we want to do it. We were just discussing: do we put it on the front? Do we put it on the sides? We’re thinking about something just up in the front, ” says Mayor Tom Sargent.

Many of the department’s officers assist with keeping the department running.
“So, we don’t technically have a chief. I, as the mayor, am in charge, everything kind of falls to me. Officer Tom Labelle is our-police liaison.”
Mayor Sargent says Labelle has gone through supervisory training and can assist with any incidents an officer might need help with.
“All of our officers take a portion of what it takes to run the department. For example, one of our officers, Tyler Lang, he’s kind of taken on the role of dealing with the fleet. We have another officer that we just hired who does certification for their firearms certifications, so everybody kind of takes on a little bit because it is a part-time department.”

The Village of Corfu purchased 19 of the 39 acres in 2024.The property goes from 77 East Main Street to Murder Creek.
“It’s all community space,” says Sargent. he says the village hopes to turn the area into a park.
“That is the goal at some point, but parks are expensive. We now have a small orchard that’s been started. We have gardens to feed the village residents, the police department and we have plans to turn the house into the historical society. So yeah, it’s lots of things on this little piece of land.”

Sargent says the green space at Homestead Park is already starting to take shape
“Our maintenance guy, he maintains this. He put some paths in so the people could come up and walk and have a have a space that they can do that. I envision fields of wildflowers.”
