Senator George Borrello presented a New York State Senate proclamation to the Oakfield-Alabama Girls Varsity Softball Team Monday in recognition of the Hornets’ historic 2026 NYSPHSAA Class D State Championship.
The Hornets defeated Windham-Ashland-Jewett 4-1 in the state championship game on June 13 at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton, securing the first state championship in any sport in Oakfield-Alabama school history.
The victory capped an exceptional 22-1 season for Oakfield-Alabama. The team was also honored with the NYS Softball Officials Class D Sportsmanship Award, recognizing the character and sportsmanship the players demonstrated alongside their success on the field.
“This championship is an extraordinary achievement for these young women, their coaches, their school and the entire Oakfield-Alabama community,” said Senator Borrello. “Becoming the first team in school history to win a state championship takes tremendous talent, but also hard work, discipline and the ability to come together as a team. Earning the Sportsmanship Award along the way says just as much about the character of these young women as the championship trophy does.”
Senator Borrello presented the proclamation to Head Coach Jeff Schlagenhauf, Assistant Coaches Jon Pritchett and Joe Pawlak, Athletic Director JC Montroy and members of the championship team.
“The players and coaches have given their community a moment that will always be part of Oakfield-Alabama history,” Senator Borrello said. “Congratulations to the entire Hornets organization on a remarkable season and a well-deserved state championship.”
The championship roster included Brooke Schramm, Allison Harkness, Savannah Durham, Raine Denny, Tori Davis, Chloe Lamb, Rylee Denny, Ysabella Schrauger, Emma Williams, Allie Williams, Emma Thompson, Gianna Fry, Kaylee Merkel and Chantelle Fluet.
Nearly the entire championship roster is expected to return next season, with senior Brooke Schramm the team’s only graduating player.
