WYOMING COUNTY/Gainesville/Investigators say fire started in a front lower apartment

Sixteen fire companies responded to an apartment house fire at 8 East street in the Village of Gainesville on Saturday morning.

The apartment house went up in flames about 8:45a.m. and five tenants are being assisted by the Red Cross. One firefighter was injured while fighting the fire as they slipped on the ice, they were treated at the scene.

The fire is believed to have started in a lower front apartment and is under investigation. The building was a total loss and an emergency demolition of the structure was completed.

The owner of the building is Jeff Rase. the estimated loss is $150,000.

On Monday morning fire crews were again called to the scene for a rekindle.

Fire companies responding to the scene were Gainesville, Bliss, Castile, Pike, Silver Springs, Alexander, North Java, Perry, Perry Center, Warsaw, Strykersville, Arcade, Sheldon, Nunda, Wiscoy-Rosberg and Fillmore.

Also assisting on scene was Wyoming County Emergency Services, Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department, Wyoming Correctional,NYS DOT, Town of Gainesville, National Fuel, and NYSEG

Fire crews were on scene for 7 hours.
