ORLEANS COUNTY/One man has died and another was transported by Mercy Flight, after being overcome as they were cleaning the inside of a semi tanker

On June 8, 2021 at 10:56am the, Orleans County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting (2) unresponsive males inside of a semi-tanker. The semi-tanker was located at 12118 East Yates Center Road in the Town of Yates, Millennium Roads LLC.

Upon arrival, fire personnel, deputies from the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from the Orleans County Emergency Management Office were able to remove (2) individuals from inside of the semi-tanker. One individual was unresponsive and the other appeared to have shallow breathing. Chase Johnson, age 35, was treated on scene by Medina Fire Department personnel and then flown to Strong Memorial Hospital via Mercy Flight. Keegan Bayne, age 19, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was learned that the (2) individuals had been cleaning inside the semi-tanker that was used to haul the product, “Lignin”.

Assisting at the scene was the, Lyndonville Fire Department, Medina Fire Department, Orleans County EMO, Genesee County EMO, Hazmat, Niagara County Technical Rescue Team, State Fire, Mercy Flight, NYSP, NYS DEC and the, Orleans County Coroner’s Office.

The incident is currently under investigation by the, Orleans County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the, NYS DEC.
