WYOMING COUNTY/Recharging battery explodes starting fire in residence

Six fire companies responded to 27 Gardeau street in the village of Perry on January 1, 2021 for a reported structure fire.

Crews from Perry, Perry Center, Castile, Warsaw, Silver Springs and Perry ambulance responded to the apartment house about 5:00p.m. for a fire in a room. One tenant was treated on scene by Perry EMS for smoke inhalation and was not transported to a hospital.

According to the Wyoming County Office of Emergency Services, the fire was contained to the room of origin with some smoke and water damage to the room. The building contained three apartments and all tenants were able to return and stay in their apartments after the fire was extinguished.

Investigators say a rechargeable battery being charged exploded, igniting combustible materials in the area.

Estimated loss in the fire was about $10,000 and fire crews were on scene for about 3 hours.

Also assisting on scene, Wyoming County Emergency Services and the Perry Police Department.
